Eli Clein Introduction

Hello everyone,

         I'm Eli Clein. Right now, I'm a junior at UAF, majoring in English with a minor in art. I was born in Qinzhou, China, but due to cleft lip and palate, I was adopted and raised in the U.S. I spent about half of my childhood in Fairbanks, Alaska, and the rest traveling. I've been through most of Central America and some of South America. I went to Italy when I was twelve, I really loved the architecture and art of Florence. I've also visited a bit of Central Europe and Spain.

        My hobbies include playing video games and playing the trading card game Magic: the Gathering. I also like the play the tabletop game Warhammer 40,000. I also paint miniatures from Warhammer as well. One of which is displayed below. I find this model appealing because I put a lot of time into painting it. I also heavily enjoyed painting it, building it, and using it in the Warhammer game.

        Besides painting miniatures, I don't have a good relationship with art. I've seen a lot of great pieces, and recognize their value, but I never felt like I fully appreciated the piece without background context. I don't really go to art galleries or museums because of this. Although, I have taken beginner drawing and color & design classes before. I also used to draw a lot of monsters as a child. I hope to be able to appreciate art more after this class.

    This class should help you appreciate art on a deeper level. You'll get lots of context! Nice job with your miniature. I had no idea that there were contests for miniature paintings.

Art Analysis "Feast in the House of Levi" by Paolo Veronese

(Veronese, Paolo Feast in the House of Levi , 1573) Background:     The Feast in the House of Levi is  an oil on canvas painting that measures 18' 3" x 42' currently located in the Academy of Fine Arts Museum in Venice, Italy. It depicts a Last Supper scene with Jesus and the twelve Apostles dining within a Venietan restaurant. The restaurant is filled to the brim with a variety of other customers, servers, and even animals. The work is very humanist as there is a lively aura to the patrons playfully eating and chatting, and it sets the biblical figures in such a normal setting. The buildings are three-dimensional and realistically sized and shaped. Art Analysis: Romantic Era, Pre-Raphaelite vs Impressionism

     During the Romantic art period, many art styles rose to prominence and popularity. Two of which are the Pre-Raphaelite style and Impressionism. Pre-Raphaelite originated from the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848, a group of young British painters who reacted against the Royal Academy's "unimaginative and artificial" paintings. They created pieces that focused on "new moral seriousness and sincerity," in spired by 14th and 15th-century Italian art. Qualities in their style included sharp lighting, a clear atmosphere, and a nearly photographic detailing of minute aspects. Their name came from a focus on pre-renaissance art, especially pre-Raphael, so they created a lot of religious and medieval-like works ( Britannica ).      Impressionism originated with a series of Parisian artists, like Claude Monet, in 1860s France.
